If you are homeless, the first place you should go to for help is your local council – look them up in the phone book, and use the 24-hour helpline if necessary. If there isn’t one listed, the police will have it.

Shelter has a network of advice centres, listed below, and the Citizens Advice Bureau or other advice service should be able to advise you. For practical advice in an emergency, look at http://scotland.shelter.org.uk/getadvice/how_we_can_help/_free_housing_advice_helpline

Other advice agencies - Citizen's Advice Bureau

Because Shelter cannot afford to run a housing aid centre in every town or city, they provide support and training for Citizens Advice Bureaux (CABx) through the Scottish Homelessness Advisory Service (SHAS).
Partly funded by Communities Scotland, SHAS provides expert advice where it's needed most. There are more than 50 CABx throughout Scotland. You can find the one nearest you in the telephone directory or by searching on the Citizens Advice Scotland website.

Other options

There may be other advice agencies or law centres in your local area. You can use the advice services search function on Shelter's housing information website, Shelternet, to find agencies in your area. Or you can phone Shelterline (free) on 0808 800 4444 to find out what independent advice agencies are near you.
