Homelessness affects all communities in Scotland - large and small, rural and urban. Last year, the highest ever number of applications was made by homeless people - 50,917 households, which adds up to about 78,000 people. 25,000 of them were children. For more facts and figures click here.

The law on homelessness has gone through major change in the last three years. Instead of saying no to most homeless people, local authorities now have to help them find a home. For a summary of the changes, click here.

Despite the changes, there remains much to be done to make sure there is a place for everyone to live. For details of Churches Housing's campaign Building on the Act, click here.

The Scottish Executive has set a target that by 2012, all unintentionally homelessness people should be offered permanent accommodation. Communities Minister, Malcolm Chisholm reported to the Scottish Parliament in December 2005 on progress towards the target. To read our summary click here
