Alastair Cameron and Diane Beckett of Scottish Churches Housing Action will consult with people from churches in the Borders on Sunday 13 March 2011 on opportunties for a supported lodgings scheme for young people at risk of homelessness in the area.
The meeting follows on work Diane has been carrying out for Scottish Borders Council to assess the feasibility of such a project, which recruits hosts to help meet an urgent need. Hosts make a room in one’s home available for periods of six to nine months as accommodation for a young person (16-21), who would otherwise be homeless. There will be support from professional agencies, and hosts are asked to supplement this by passing on skills in independent living.
Diane has consulted young people and housing providers locally: "There is great enthusiasm for the idea," she says. "Now we need to test our view that there are people in the community who would commit to it."
All are welcome to the meeting, which takes place at 2.00 pm on Sunday 13 March, at the Trinity Centre, High Cross Avenue, Melrose TD6 9SU.
