homelessness in scotland

Scottish Churches Housing Action believes there can be a Scotland free of homelessness.

This means everyone can live in homes which

  • they can afford
  • offer comfort and dignity
  • offer support appropriate to the needs of different stages of their lives
  • offer a place in a positive community.

Scottish Churches Housing Action exists to equip and support the churches in their work towards this vision. Look around the site to find out more about our work.

26,607 households were assessed by their local authority as homeless in Scotland in 2016-17.  Find out more...

Meet your MSP

Scottish Churches Housing Action has joined with Scottish Churches Parliamentary Office in support of the Meet your MSP initiative. Meet your MSP aims to build links between congregations and their recently-elected members of the Scottish Parliament.

This is a chance for church communities to be at the heart of the decisions that affect our everyday lives. What better way to get involved than for your church or community group to meet local MSPs early in their term of office? And issues around housing and homelessness are a good starting point for the conversation. Read our briefing here  - it suggests questions you might want to use.

SCPO are providing ideas and information on their website that will help you to organise meetings that will be interesting for everyone involved. They have contacted all 129 MSPs regarding the project and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive – they want to meet you!

Homelessness in Scotland:
the challenges of uncertainty

Rt Rev Dr Russell Barr, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, spoke at Scottish Churches Housing Action's event on Friday 7 October. Read our report on the day here.

"At the moment the best we are doing is managing homelessness...without a collective endeavour by central and local government working with the voluntary sector, I see little hope of us ending it.”

This was Russell's key message, as he called on the Scottish Government to oversee a 'collective endeavour' to tackle homelessness by involving organisations at all levels.
