Churches Property & Housing Programme

Working with the churches and others, we aim to help our churches make better use of their surplus, redundant or underused buildings and land and help people who need affordable homes – demonstrating Faith in Social Housing.   • Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) view on best price

At Scottish Churches Housing Action’s 2007 Make It Happen conference, we found that the question of the price obtained by churches for selling property was a barrier to our approach.

Churches said they had to seek the highest price available from any sale. Housing associations could not compete on these terms.

We sought advice from the Office of the Scottish Charities Regulator (OSCR): they say there is flexibility about obtaining highest price when the property is sold for charitable purpose.

Our unique 2 year pilot to test the potential for churches to develop affordable homes from their surplus properties completed in August 2007. A recent evaluation concluded the pilot was really successful and showed great promise for the future. To find out more click here.
