We’re calling on walkers to join us in Edinburgh on Friday 7 June! We are holding a Walk of Unity to highlight the way we bring the churches together to act against homelessness, and to raise awareness of homelessness and its issues. Any sponsorship raised will go towards our work: campaigning, setting up local projects through-out Scotland, and using church property to help in the provision of affordable housing. The walk will take us between churches of different denominations, and will feature some iconic Edinburgh sights as well as the “everyday city”. Whilst enjoying the sights along the way – Edinburgh Castle & Princes St Gardens, Arthur’s Seat & Salisbury Crags, Portobello beach – the walk will remind us that this is a city of contrasts. Behind the picture-postcard views there are many homeless people living in B&Bs, hostels or unsuitable temporary accommodation in the city, both adults and children, with quite a focus in the Easter Road/Leith Walk/London Road area. We want to be aware, not just of Edinburgh’s tourist sights, but of our homeless neighbours.
There will be 3 walk options:
1) From St John’s Episcopal Church in the West End, to the United Reformed Church in Duke Street (2.5 miles)
2) From URC Duke Street to St John’s Roman Catholic Church, Portobello (3 miles)
3) All the way from St John’s West End to St John’s Portobello (5.5 miles) – with half an hour’s pause for refreshments at Duke St, and more at the end!
THE ROUTE: Starting at St John’s West End at 10am our route will take us along Princes St, straight on to Waterloo Place and Regent Road with lovely views of Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags; then down to cross London Road and along Easter Road, turning left into Duke St for the URC Church around 11am, where teas/coffees etc will be available. Some will leave the walk here, others will join, and all-the-way walkers will enjoy a breather!
Then at 11.30am from Duke Street we’ll head right and over into Vanburgh Place to walk along Hermitage Place and onwards beside Leith Links, heading for Seafield Place. By the Edinburgh Cat & Dog home we’ll make our way to the Prom, for a refreshing walk by the sea into Portobello. We’ll then head up Bath Street to the main road, crossing into Brighton Place for our goal, St John’s RC Church. To add to our church mix, a Church of Scotland minister will say a few words at the end of our “pilgrimage”, there will be soup and other refreshments, and more time to chat.
Places are limited to 50, so don’t delay! You can find further details on an information leaflet here, and download our registration form here, and a sponsorship form here! If you have any questions at all, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or give us a call on 0131 477 4500. We’d love for you to join us!
If you are unable to do the walk but would like to support us in it, you can join in by sponsoring Heather or Lauren. And if you would like to arrange a Walk of Unity in your own area, to raise funds for SCHA and unite your local churches, we can support you in this. Please just get in touch as above…
